Not everybody is entirely encouraged that moving psychological health care online is the method forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you fulfill somebody in person, in the same room,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You learn more about not only what it resembles to speak to the individual, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, but it doesn’t create the closeness, the intimacy, that really gets people to open up and explore things.”

” I have actually carried out some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s simply not quite the very same thing. It’s truly crucial that individuals who take part in it know that it’s a different experience from being in the space with somebody, speaking in person.”

” In terms of ease of access, it’s an excellent start and definitely better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually appearing in the space. If you’re having a hard time with relationship issues, attachment problems, or deeper problems, it’s much better to be in the space with someone. Skype and the internet offers a distance from your counsellor that may not be useful.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs rather than in person counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.

” My fear is that it’s happening more and more for financial reasons, instead of since it’s what’s best for individuals. That’s not great if it’s rolled out simply to save money and there aren’t crucial concerns being asked about these services. Then, I’m always very sceptical of people who are either extremely really pro or extremely really against online mental health care. It’s a case of asking the best concerns.”

I signed up for 4 extremely different online mental health services– ranging in cost from free to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, simultaneously, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

Does BetterHelp use licensed therapists? Betterhelp.Bethenny Frankel’s Latest Rant On Nyhousewives

What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each psychological health service, rather than its efficiency – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in just one week. I’m simply comparing each service to the experience of sitting in a space and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyway), US company is the business leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 licensed counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of 3 years of experience.

After filling out a questionnaire to establish what particular flavour of mental you are, you’re coupled with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an instant messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on until one of you ultimately passed away.

What does it cost?

You get a complimentary seven-day trial – similar to a complimentary Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with method more concerns about what your youth resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unlimited message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor each month. Yeah, I do not get how it’s free either, however whatever.

How much is BetterHelp monthly?

If you find the idea of baring your soul to a stranger a bit awks, filtering that through instant messaging might be practical. You won’t get the same connection similar to in person counselling, but the semi-anonymity may make it simpler to open up if you have actually been consuming two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.

She initially determined the scale of my anxiety, what activates it– social circumstances, meeting people for the first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious childhood (separated parents, stretched familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was quite nosey tbh, but then that’s her task, isn’t it?

In general, the service is remarkably slick. The discussion can be a little stop-starty sometimes, but it was really a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got rapid actions to messages over the weekend, which was unforeseen.

Talkspace vs Betterhelp

The reality you can modify messages before sending them indicates you’re unlikely to blurt out something revealing and vulnerable in the heat of the minute. So profound moments of realisation may be tough to come by if you can’t get an unwinded flow going.

Who do I think it might it be good for?

Anyone with a low-end psychological health problem who’s cool with getting counselled in a very internet-y, 2016-y method. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud you can possibly imagine and need severe attention (and possibly some medications), most likely isn’t for you Betterhelp.Bethenny Frankel’s Latest Rant On Nyhousewives
