Not everybody is totally convinced that shifting mental health care online is the way forward. “For me, what works in therapy is when you fulfill somebody face-to-face, in the same room,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You are familiar with not only what it resembles to talk to the individual, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, but it does not develop the nearness, the intimacy, that truly gets individuals to open up and check out things.”
” I’ve carried out some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s simply not quite the same thing. It’s really crucial that individuals who engage in it are aware that it’s a various experience from remaining in the space with someone, speaking face-to-face.”
” In terms of availability, it’s a good start and certainly better than absolutely nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to eventually showing up in the room.
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs instead of in person counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
” My fear is that it’s taking place more and more for financial reasons, instead of since it’s what’s best for individuals. If it’s rolled out simply to save cash and there aren’t important concerns being asked about these services, that’s not good. However then, I’m always extremely sceptical of individuals who are either very really pro or really very against online psychological health care. It’s a case of asking the right concerns.”
I signed up for 4 really different online mental health services– ranging in expense from complimentary to , 100 a month– and ran my stress and anxieties through them all, simultaneously, for a week. Here’s what I discovered.

What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each mental health service, instead of its effectiveness – due to the fact that even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in just one week. I’m simply comparing each service to the experience of being in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

You get a complimentary seven-day trial – much like a complimentary Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with method more concerns about what your childhood was like. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for limitless message-based counselling and one ‘totally free’ phone session with your counsellor per month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s free either, however whatever.

Filtering that through immediate messaging may be helpful if you discover the concept of baring your soul to a complete stranger a bit awks. You will not get the same connection similar to face-to-face counselling, but the semi-anonymity may make it much easier to open up if you have actually been drinking two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.
She first ascertained the scale of my anxiety, what triggers it– social circumstances, meeting individuals for the first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious youth (separated parents, strained familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was pretty nosey tbh, but then that’s her job, isn’t it?
Overall, the service is remarkably slick. The discussion can be a little stop-starty at times, but it was in fact a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got fast actions to messages over the weekend, which was unanticipated.

The reality you can edit messages prior to sending them means you’re unlikely to blurt out something unguarded and revealing in the heat of the moment. Extensive moments of realisation may be difficult to come by if you can’t get an unwinded flow going.

Anybody with a low-end mental health concern who’s cool with getting counselled in a very internet-y, 2016-y method.
