Not everybody is totally encouraged that moving mental health care online is the method forward. “You get to know not just what it’s like to talk to the person, but how it feels to be in a space with them.
” I have actually performed some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s just not quite the very same thing. It’s truly essential that people who participate in it understand that it’s a various experience from being in the room with someone, speaking in person.”

” In terms of availability, it’s a great start and certainly much better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately revealing up in the room.
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs instead of in person counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
” My fear is that it’s taking place more and more for financial factors, instead of due to the fact that it’s what’s finest for individuals. That’s not great if it’s rolled out just to save money and there aren’t important questions being asked about these services. However then, I’m constantly really sceptical of people who are either really really professional or extremely really versus online mental healthcare. It’s a case of asking the right questions.”

How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyway), United States company is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling video game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of 3 years of experience.
After filling out a survey to establish what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re paired with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a various one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an immediate messaged therapy session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on up until one of you eventually passed away.
What does it cost?
You get a free seven-day trial – similar to a totally free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, except with way more concerns about what your childhood resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unrestricted message-based counselling and one ‘totally free’ phone session with your counsellor each month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s free either, but whatever.
How much is BetterHelp monthly?
Filtering that through immediate messaging might be helpful if you find the idea of baring your soul to a stranger a bit awks. You will not get the exact same connection as with in person counselling, but the semi-anonymity may make it much easier to open if you’ve been consuming two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.
She first determined the scale of my stress and anxiety, what triggers it– social situations, satisfying individuals for the first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious childhood (divorced parents, strained familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was quite nosey tbh, however then that’s her task, isn’t it?
Overall, the service is remarkably slick. The conversation can be a little stop-starty sometimes, but it was really a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got fast responses to messages over the weekend, which was unexpected.
Talkspace vs Betterhelp
The reality you can modify messages before sending them means you’re unlikely to blurt out something revealing and unguarded in the heat of the minute. So extensive minutes of realisation might be hard to come by if you can’t get a relaxed flow going.
Who do I think it might it be good for?
Anyone with a low-end psychological health concern who’s cool with getting counselled in a really internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud imaginable and need serious attention (and possibly some medications), most likely isn’t for you Is Talkspace Confidential
