Not everybody is totally convinced that moving mental health care online is the method forward. “For me, what operate in therapy is when you fulfill someone in person, in the exact same room,” says London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not only what it’s like to speak with the individual, but how it feels to be in a space with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘good enough’, however it does not create the nearness, the intimacy, that truly gets individuals to open and check out things.”
” I’ve performed some research into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s simply not quite the same thing. It’s actually important that people who engage in it are aware that it’s a different experience from being in the room with somebody, speaking face-to-face.”
” In regards to ease of access, it’s an excellent start and certainly better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to ultimately showing up in the space. If you’re having a hard time with relationship issues, accessory concerns, or deeper issues, it’s much better to be in the space with somebody. Skype and the web uses a distance from your counsellor that may not be useful.”
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs instead of face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.
If it’s rolled out simply to save cash and there aren’t vital questions being asked about these services, that’s not excellent. Then, I’m constantly really sceptical of people who are either very extremely professional or extremely very versus online psychological health care.
I signed up for four very different online mental health services– ranging in cost from totally free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, at the same time, for a week. Here’s what I found.

What I’m doing here is evaluating my experience of using each mental health service, rather than its efficiency – since even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in just one week. I’m just comparing each service to the experience of sitting in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!
How does it work?
As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), US business is the corporate leviathan of the e-counselling game. They claim to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with a minimum of three years of experience.
After filling out a questionnaire to determine what specific flavour of mental you are, you’re paired with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a different one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then start an instantaneous messaged treatment session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, go on and on till one of you ultimately passed away.
What does it cost?
You get a totally free seven-day trial – similar to a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with way more concerns about what your youth resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for endless message-based counselling and one ‘complimentary’ phone session with your counsellor monthly. Yeah, I do not get how it’s complimentary either, but whatever.

Filtering that through instant messaging may be valuable if you find the concept of baring your soul to a complete stranger a bit awks. You won’t get the same connection similar to face-to-face counselling, but the semi-anonymity might make it much easier to open if you’ve been consuming two bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s bridal gown every night.
She first determined the scale of my stress and anxiety, what triggers it– social circumstances, fulfilling individuals for the very first time– and after that dived headlong into my fractious youth (separated moms and dads, stretched familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was pretty nosey tbh, however then that’s her task, isn’t it?
In general, the service is impressively slick. The conversation can be a little stop-starty at times, but it was in fact a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I anticipated. I even got rapid actions to messages over the weekend, which was unforeseen.
Talkspace vs Betterhelp
The reality you can edit messages before sending them implies you’re not likely to blurt out something revealing and unguarded in the heat of the moment. Profound minutes of realisation might be difficult to come by if you can’t get an unwinded flow going.
Who do I think it might it be good for?
Anybody with a low-end mental health problem who’s cool with getting counselled in a very internet-y, 2016-y method. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud imaginable and need serious attention (and potentially some meds), probably isn’t for you Online Marriage Counseling Resources
