Not everybody is totally encouraged that moving mental health care online is the way forward. “You get to understand not just what it’s like to talk to the person, but how it feels to be in a space with them.
” I have actually carried out some research study into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s just not quite the exact same thing. It’s actually important that individuals who take part in it know that it’s a different experience from being in the room with someone, speaking face-to-face.”
” In terms of availability, it’s an excellent start and definitely better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to eventually revealing up in the space.
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs instead of in person counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
If it’s rolled out simply to save money and there aren’t important concerns being asked about these services, that’s not great. Then, I’m constantly very sceptical of individuals who are either really very professional or extremely really versus online mental health care.

What I’m doing here is examining my experience of using each mental health service, rather than its effectiveness – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘cure’ you in simply one week. I’m just comparing each service to the experience of being in a room and blarting on about yourself to a therapist. Nod if you’re with me. Okay, cool – let’s mental health!

Overall, the service is remarkably slick. The discussion can be a little stop-starty at times, but it was actually a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I expected. I even got fast actions to messages over the weekend, which was unforeseen.
